Herod the Great: The King’s Final Journey

King Herod has always been a source of fascination for scholars and the general public. In 2013, the Museum held an exhibition entirely devoted to Israel’s greatest builder and one of the most controversial figures in Jewish history. The exhibition presented large reconstructions and new finds from Herod’s palaces in Herodium, Jericho, and other sites.  Shown to the public for the very first time, these artifacts shed light on the political, architectural, and aesthetic significance of Herod’s rule in Judea (37–4 BCE). Herod’s tomb – discovered at Herodium after a forty-year search by the late Prof. Ehud Netzer of the Hebrew University, held pride of place in this blockbuster exhibition, which drew crowds such as had never been seen before in an archaeological exhibition.
The rich accompanying publication presents the fruits of deep and comprehensive research conducted by the exhibition team. Replete with spectacular landscape photography, photographs of the objects, documentation of the excavations and of the painstaking restoration work performed at the Museum laboratories, as well as beautiful installation shots, it offers us a glimpse of this unforgettable exhibition.
