Kohen Notebook, Mishneh Torah
Maimonides, the greatest Torah scholar of all time, wrote his magnum opus Mishneh Torah in the twelfth century. The decoration on the notebook’s cover is an illustration from the chapter Hilkhot Beit HaMikdash (“Laws of Entering the Temple”) in Sefer Avodah (“Book of Service”), one of the fourteen books comprising the work. In 2015, the Israel Museum exhibited two volumes of the Mishneh Torah in a version copied in the mid-fifteenth century. Shown in this illustration is a kohen (priest) sipping from a cup. The image accompanies a text discussing a priest who became intoxicated and was consequently prohibited from service in the Temple.
