Laws of Tithing Notebook, Mishneh Torah
Maimonides, the greatest Torah scholar of all time, wrote his magnum opus Mishneh Torah in the twelfth century. The decoration on the notebook’s cover is an illustration from the opening page of the chapter Hilkhot Ma’asser (“Laws of Tithing”) in Sefer Zera’im (“Book of Seeds”), one of the fourteen books comprising the work. In 2015, the Israel Museum exhibited two volumes of the Mishneh Torah in a version copied in the mid-fifteenth century. Shown in this illustration are a Levite man and woman carrying a sheaf of wheat as a tithe to be contributed to the Temple.
The original manuscript is jointly owned by The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2013
