Ashdoda

This schematic figurine represents a seated woman merging with the throne on which she sits. Cult figurines of this type were inspired by Mycenaean statuettes representing the “Mother Goddess.” Discovered during excavations in Ashdod, one of the five major Philistine cities, this figurine is decorated with black and red stripes, a feature characteristic of Philistine pottery – thus providing further evidence of the Aegean origin of the Philistines.
The original object is in the collection of the Israel Antiquities Authority
