Hanukkah Lamp Adorned with Animals (cast brass)

Hanukkah lamps from Poland have a distinct feature: apart from the backplate, they have two side panels, each of which is topped by a candleholder. These were used for the Sabbath candles all year round, and during Hanukkah the right-hand candleholder was used for the shamash (servant light).
The backplate’s elegant design, recalling papercut art, incorporates animals such as gazelles, lions, birds, and even imaginary creatures. Papercutting was popular among the Jews of Poland, and many typical papercut motifs appear on Hanukkah lamps from the region.
