Hanukkah Lamp with Scrolled Branches
The backplate of this Hanukkah lamp consists of decorative scrolled branches, and a triangular cartouche at its center is inscribed with the Hebrew verse: “For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light” (Proverbs 6:23). This verse was often incorporated in the decoration of Hanukkah lamps, probably because – as interpreted by Rashi, the medieval rabbi and commentator – it ties together the notions of commandment, light, and Torah learning.
The original item belongs to the Stieglitz Collection, donated to the Museum with the contribution of Erica and Ludwig Jesselson, New York, to American Friends of the Israel Museum
