Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New ‎Year) is a day of judgment, but the ‎divine decree does not become final until after ‎the Ten Penitential Days culminating in Yom ‎Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This is ‎a solemn fast day on which worshipers implore ‎God to forgive their sins and pray to ‎be inscribed in the Book of Life. At the end of ‎Yom Kippur, the divine inscription is sealed – ‎hence the hope for a  Hatimah Tovah (“a good ‎closing seal”). Cards with this phrase are sent, ‎usually in reply to New Year’s greetings.‎
